Jajpur is the Ancient Capital City of Odisha established by King Jajati I of the Somavanshi dynasty and is nationally renowned for its Tussar Silk Handloom and Stone Carving Handicrafts. The city is also home to the ancient Biraja Temple and the Ratnagiri and Udayagiri Buddhist monasteries. Jajpur has remained very famous for many arts and crafts for centuries. Gopalpur village, Rasulpur block has distinctive expertise in producing fine Tussar silk products which are in huge demand in and out of the country. Similarlay, the stone carving of Sukhuapada, golden grass of Antia and terracotta of Prathamkandi are famous. While few villages in the district still maintain their “Kala Parampara'' (craft tradition), many villages are rapidly losing this, primarily because of low wages, outward migration, lack of branding etc.
Jajpur boasts a rich cultural tapestry woven through the hands of artisans skilled in four distinctive crafts. Tussar silk handloom, Golden grass products, terracotta, and stone carving.
CRAFTS OF JAJPUR
Tussar is a form of silk – derived from larvae of various species of silk worms. The silk yarn is handwoven into intricate designs to make sarees, scarves, jackets, etc. Gopalpur, a Tussar cluster in Jajpur is about 400 years old. There are about 1900 Tussar silk weavers in Jajpur District. They majorly face challenges due to a scarcity of good quality raw materials, leading to increased costs that impact pricing and sales.
Ancient practice of stone carving is a form of art where pieces of rough natural stones are shaped by the controlled removal of stone. There are about 155 Stone workers in Jajpur. In the realm of Stone Carving, traditional practices are grappling with legal constraints in stone procurement, a limited market for traditional products, and insufficient sales channels.
Golden grass is a wild grass found in many villages of Odisha. The grass is split into two even strands and as the grass dries, it changes colour from pale green to mild yellow to golden yellow - This is where the craft derives its name. Each Golden Grass handicraft item takes anywhere between a day and a month to complete. There are around 200 Golden grass craftspeople in Jajpur.
Terracotta craftsmanship specializes in pottery and clay products. There are over 105 Terracotta artisans in Jajpur. The primary challenge with the craft is an overemphasis on decorative items, limiting its customer base, while potential solutions involve design diversification and technology integration.
